To make a wind mill

You will need

  • Colored card stock or construction paper
  • Thumbtack or stick pin
  • Pencil with new eraser
  • White craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Sequins
  • pattern template
  • method

  1. Print the pattern onto plain copy or printer paper.
  2. Cut the square pattern out, cutting on the solid lines.
  3. Lay pattern on top of colored paper and trace the square. Cut out the square from the colored paper.
  4. Keep the pattern square on top of the colored square. Either hold it in place with your fingers or tape it down lightly on two of the sides.
  5. Cut through the pattern and the colored paper along the dotted lines but do not cut in to the center circle.
  6. Use a thumbtack or stick pin to poke out the holes in every other corner as indicated on the pattern. Set the pattern piece aside.
  7. Take one corner (one with a hole) and fold it toward the center of the square. Fold the next corner that has a hole and fold it toward the center on top of the first holed corner. Repeat with the other two corners with holes until all four are folded into the center. Glue the folds to each other and to the center. Hold together until dry.
  8. Push the thumbtack through the center of the pinwheel and into the eraser of the pencil. Make sure the pinwheel isn’t touching the eraser or it won’t spin.
  9. Glue some sequins to the flaps of the pinwheel and let dry.

Dough Hand Print

You will need

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring
  • Ribbon
  • Gold marker
  • Wax paper
Method

  1. Add food coloring to the water. I use pink for girls, blue for boys.
  2. Mix all ingredients well, kneading until smooth.
    1. Dough should be pretty stiff, not soft or runny or it will fill with air bubbles when baking.
  3. Form dough into a ball, of about what you can enclose in your two hands, and form into a round smooth ball.
  4. Using a rolling pin with the dough on wax paper, roll out into as round of a circle as you can.
    1.  Dough will be about 1.25 [1/2 inch] thick.
  5. Press the hand with fingers splayed into the dough.  Make sure to press deep enough without going completely to the bottom. (When it bakes it tends to raise the hand print up.)
  6. Put on a cookie sheet.
  7. Use a chop stick or pencil, etc. to make two holes in the top about 1.5cm [1/2 inch] apart.
    1. These holes will be used to string the ribbon through.
  8. Bake at 200 degrees for about 2-3 hours.
    1. Dough should be fairly hard but watch to see that it doesn't burn.
  9. When they are done and cooled, use a gold marker pen and write the name and date (year).
  10.  Tie a ribbon at the top (blue or pink - or gold) to use as a loop to hang.
