Don't throw away your old newspapers. Try making your own recycled paper!

Recycled paper can be made from old newspaper, following the instructions below. Recycling paper uses cellulose (plant fibers) over and over again, it uses less electricity, less water, a lot less pollution, and it saves trees from being cut down! You will need: a food processor or an old blender an electric iron an old wire hanger an old pair of panty hose newspaper or other paper, torn into 2-inch squares white glue water an insect screen or strainer (optional) food coloring (optional) a big sink or tub filled with 4 inches of water Make sure you have a place to work where you can make a big mess! Make a frame out of the coat hanger. You'll need a frame for each piece of paper you make. Stretch the hanger and bend it into a rectangle/square shape. Take one leg of the panty hose and stretch it carefully over the hanger frame. Make sure it is tight and flat. Put a handful of the torn up paper and some water into the food processor or blender. Blend the mixture on high until it becomes mushy. Keep adding paper and water until you have a big gray blob. You may have to add a little more water to keep things moving smoothly. Keep the food processor on until all the paper has disappeared. Then leave it on for 2 minutes. For some color, add a handful of brown or red onion skin (not the onion itself, just the papery outer skin) and just like dying eggs brown the dye from the onion skins will alter the paper color you are making. Put 2 tablespoons of white glue in the sink water and add all of the paper pulp you just made. Mix it really well. Use your hands. Scoop the frame to the bottom of the sink, then lift it slowly. (Count to 20 slowly while you are lifting.) Let the water drain out for about a minute. Hang the frames on a clothesline or put them out in the sun. Wait until they are completely dry with no dampness at all. You can then gently peel off the paper. Use the iron, set on the hottest setting, to steam out your paper. You can keep making paper until the pulp is all strained out of the sink. Mix up the sink every time you make a new piece. Try other things like using in insect screen over a wood frame, or a strainer instead of the pantyhose and hanger. Try adding lots of food coloring, for colored paper, or try adding lint or leaves to the food processor. Your paper will have an interesting texture. Making your own paper can be fun, and it's a great way to re-use old paper. You can recycle all kinds of paper for re-use. Sometimes paper printed from color-inkjet printers will run, that is, the color will bleed off and become part of your new paper, but that can make for an interesting effect!

Materials needed

• newspapers
• scissors or paper shredder.
• large jar with lid
• hot water
• plastic spoon
• disposable pan
• cornstarch
• wax paper
• Decorations - food dye, flowers, leaves

1. Cover the area you will be working in as the paper making is a messy job.
2. Cut the sheets of newspaper paper into strips.
3. tear them into small pieces
1. You'll need about 1 1/2 packed cups of shredded and torn paper.
4. Place the paper in a large jar.
5. Fill the jar up with 3 cups of hot water.
6. Screw the lid on the jar and stand for 3 hours.
7. Stir the pieces with a plastic spoon to keep the pieces of paper from clumping together.
1. The more you stir the smoother the pulp will become.
8. Add more hot water as the paper absorbs tit.
9. When the mixture is pasty and creamy, pour it into a disposable 0pan.
10. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of cornstarch in a half cup of hot water.
11. Pour the mix into the paper mix.
12. Mix thoroughly.
13. Take a handful of the mixture and squeeze out the excess water.
14. Put the mixture on a piece of wax paper.
15. Add the decorations -sprinkle the food dye on, place in a flat flower or leaf.
16. Smush it down so that the mix is now like flat paper.
17. Put another piece of wax paper down on top of the first mix.
18. Press you hands down on top of the paper... letting the water seep out.
19. Wipe the excess water off.
20. Place the paper in the sun and let it dry.
21. Repeat this process with the rest of the mixture.
22. As the paper dries keep pressing it down to get the water out of it.

Make a Paper Votive Lampshade

• Paper Scissors or Rotary cutter
• Coloured Pencils
• Clear taps

1. Choose a design that you want to use that suits the offering yur candle is intended for..
2. Enlarge the design that you are choosing to use on a piece of paper large enough to wrap around the votive candle.
3. Wrap a piece of paper around the base of the candle. 
1. Be sure that ends of the paper touch. 
4. Cut the paper so that you only have 0.5cm  [1/4 inch] overlapping.
5. Cut the paper to the appropriate height.
6. Trace or draw a design of your choosing onto the paper.
7. Cut 2.5 cm [1-inch] slits along the lines of the design.
1.  Do not completely cut out the design as you only want the light to shine through the cut lines. 
1. If you are using small shapes, then you can completely cut out these designs.
8. Color the paper using crayons, or colored pencils. 
1. The light will not shine through as well if you use markers, or paint.
9. Wrap the paper around the candle. Overlap the two ends and tape over the seam.

There aremother ways of creating the Votive lampshade effect - one is to use a sewing machine.

Butterfly mobile

• 10 or 12 coffee filtered pre made Butterflies.
• Light string or heavy cotton
• Very thin wood in various sizes.
• Wood can be doling or for a more natural look twigs

1. Cut the string / thread so that the ends of the body pipe cleaner are able to be attached 
2. Use a round turn and two half hitches for tying the string to the body pipe cleaner.
3. Tie another longer piece of string to the string that is going between the ends of the body pipe cleaner.
4. Place this attached butterfly to one side and finish tying the rest of the butterflies. 
5. Sort out the pieces of wood.  
1. The larger pieces will be going to the top of the mobile.
6. Tie the butterflies onto the smaller pieces of wood.
7. Again with round turns and two half hitches attach one piece of the next size smaller wood to the larger piece. 
1.  Remember that both ends of the larger piece of wood should have a piece of wood attached.
8. Starting from the smallest piece of wood - on each piece of wood find where the balance point is.  
1. It is at the balance point that the string between both pieces of wood will be attached.
9. now that every piece of wood has something tied to it and all in in balance and tied tightly in place with a double over hand knot tie a loop in the stop piece of string.
1. This loop will be hooked over something on the roof.
2. Double check that the wood or butterflies will not be in someone's way as either the butterflies move with the breezes or the people move around the room

Coffee filter butterflies

Materials:

• pipe cleaners (assorted colors)
• coffee filters (large size)
• water-based markers
• small spray bottle filled with water (optional)

1. Give each Guide a coffee filter.
2. Color the coffee filter with markers.
3. Hold up the coffee filter, and spray with water or dip fingers in water and shake them at the coffee filter. Watch as the colors spread and run together.
4. Once the filter is dry, bunch it in the middle and wrap a pipe cleaner around it.
5.  Make sure you leave a little extra pipe cleaner to make two antennas.

Dryer Lint Clay

Start saving that dryer lint now and then mix up a batch of clay. Not only will you make some unique clay, this is an exceptional way to recycle.

Materials Needed:

• 2 Cups Dryer Lint (Lightly Packed)
• 1/3 Cup White Glue
• 1 Tablespoon Dish Washing Soap
• 1/4 - 1/3 Cup Warm Water

Instructions:
In a medium sized bowl, mix together the white glue, dish washing soap, and a 1/4 cup of the water. Once it is mixed well, slowly add the 2 cups of dryer lint, tearing into small pieces before you add it.

Mix this all together, kneading if necessary. If the mixture is too dry, you can add more water, a little at a time, until your lint clay is easy to work with.

Store your clay covered to keep it moist or let it sit out to air dry for several days.

Home made clay

Believe it or not, you can make clay using slices of bread!

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:

1. Cut the crust off 7 pieces of bread.
2. Break the bread into tiny pieces and put them in a medium-sized bowl.
3. Add 7 teaspoons of white glue and mix thoroughly.
4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of water and 1/2 teaspoon dish washing detergent.
5. Knead your mixture until you get a nice clay consistancy.
6. Make sculptures out of your clay and let air dry.

Tips:

1. If your mixture is too dry, add a bit more water.
2. Air drying usually takes about 24 hours.
3. Don't eat this dough!
