Sunflower Pillow

What you'll need:

  • ½ sheet gold felt
  • ½ sheet brown felt
  • 4-6 cotton balls
  • Small scrap of red felt
  • Black craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun

How to make it:

  1. Using the pattern cut out 2 large circles from brown felt and the flower from gold felt. Cut out the center circle of the felt flower.
  2. Glue one of the brown circles onto the center of the flower.
  3. Turn the flower over and glue the other brown circle to the other side, leaving about an inch or so open for the filling.
  4. Carefully stuff the center of the flower with cotton balls.
  5. Glue open end of the circle shut.
  6. Cut an oval from the red felt to make a ladybug.
  7. Paint one end of the red felt with black paint to create the head.
Use the handle end of the paintbrush to add dots to the ladybug’s back.
     Let paint dry.
  8. Glue your  ladybug to the flower.

Tips:

  • Hot glue can really hurt, so have a grown-up help you with those steps.
  • When gluing the last part of the center circle closed, use a toothpick or craft stick to press the felt onto the glue so that you don’t burn your fingers.
  • Keep plenty of different colored felts on hand for fun and quick projects!

Autumn Table Decoration

What you'll need:
  • 1 brown paper lunch bag
  • 1 cup rice
  • Re-sealable zipper sandwich bag
  • Fresh and silk leaves
  • Twigs
  • 3-4 green chenille stems, cut into fourths OR tape
  • 60 cm [2 feet] twine
  • Paint: yellow, brown, green
  • Scissors
  • Something to apply the paint with.

How to make it:

  1. Paint bag with wide green stripes. Let dry before painting other colors.
    1. When dry, add thin lines of yellow and brown.
    2. If not straight lines use splatters of paint.
  2. Place a leaf at the top of a twig and secure with a section of chenille stem.
  3. Repeat with several twigs and leaves, both fresh and silk. You can also use tape instead of chenille.
  4. Trim three inches off the top of the bag.
  5. Place rice inside sandwich bag, place bag of rice into the brown paper bag.
  6. Place twigs into the bag.
    1. If twigs are too tall (leaves should touch the top of the bag), snap bottoms of twigs to shorten.
  7. Wrap twine around the bag twice.
  8. Tighten the twine and adjust leaves and twigs as you tighten.
  9. Tie twine in a bow and trim the ends.

Tips:

  1. Using fresh leaves is a temporary thing as most plants fresh leaves will wilt and curl up.  There are many natives in Australia that simply dry out still adhered to their twigs.Try using dried fallen leaves for a more permanent arrangement. On that note the fresh leaves make a nice addition to the table.
  2. For an even simpler project, paint stripes with only one color.
  3. Instead of twine, use ribbon or yarn.

paper mache ideas

The things you can make with paper mache are only limited by your imagination.

As paper mache dries, it hardens over the mold you have made. You can make puppet heads, Christmas ornaments, piñatas, dolls, dollhouses, boxes, sculptures or bowls. The final dried product can be painted, decoupaged or decorated however you please.
Make a form from wire, wadded newspaper, stuffed paper bags, or balloons. For a flat piece, such as a dollhouse or box, you can use a piece of cardboard. Tear newspaper into strips. Narrower strips work best for a rounded mold and larger strips are good for flat or rectangular shapes.

Choose one of the following recipes to make the paste. Dip strips into paste, coating completely, squeezing out excess paste with your fingers. Use the strips to cover your pre-made form. If you overlap the strips, your finished product will look smoother. Allow each layer to dry before adding another layer. Cover your form with at least 2 layers.
